Why it changes everything

"I think I'll be fine."

"I know I'll be fine."

The difference isn't more money. It's a plan where every future commitment is already funded.

Budget3 won't tell you "you spent $127 at Tim Hortons". It tells you: "here's what you can actually afford".

The method

Four steps, one setup

Budget3 applies the “pay yourself first” method: reserve your money at the source, before it gets spent.

  1. 1

    Plan your net income

Only what actually lands in your account. No gross pay, no tax math. Fixed or variable income, employee or self-employed.

  2. 2

    List your commitments

Rent, groceries, insurance, debt, investments, savings goals. Each commitment has an amount, a frequency and a date.

  3. 3

    Reserve at the source

Budget3 turns every future commitment into an amount to set aside today. That's the minimum required balance: money already promised, that you shouldn't spend.

  4. 4

    Schedule your transfers

Budget3 calculates the recommended transfer for each occurrence and each account. You schedule them once at your bank, and the funding chain does the rest.

Your starting point

One, two or three accounts: you choose

Budget3 works with a single account. Extra accounts are always optional.

Simple

1 account · 1 credit card

One account to watch. Every commitment is paid from the main account, and the credit card is repaid from there too.

Ideal if : You want to start fast, without opening a new account.

Good to know : No separation between reserved money and free money.

Intermediate

2 accounts · 1 credit card

Your essentials are protected from payday: the main account transfers to the reserve, which pays commitments and the card.

Ideal if : You want money reserved at the source without juggling accounts.

Good to know : All reserved money sits in a single account.

Optimal

3 accounts · 1 credit card

Essentials protected, the rest under control: the reserve feeds the daily account weekly and the credit card.

Ideal if : You want every account to have one clear job and a natural cap.

Good to know : Requires three bank accounts: check your banking plan's fees.

You can also build your own structure. Whichever model you start with, you can change everything later.

The story

Why I built Budget3

After going back to school for engineering in my mid-thirties, I finished with roughly $25,000 in debt. A more stable income was coming, and with it a pile of questions: am I okay? How long to pay this off? Can I afford anything at all?

A spreadsheet, my income, my commitments, my scenarios. The realization was immediate: about $1,000 per paycheque, debt cleared in a year.

It wasn't a feeling anymore, it was a calculation.

2016 → 2026 · ten years of validation

  1. The spreadsheet

The method, validated over years — for myself first.

  2. A first app

Built too fast, far too complex. Abandoned.

  3. Back to the method

Keep what actually worked, drop the rest.

  4. Budget3

The same method, made simple and accessible.
